β€œI’ve got an old-fashioned name, but I keep it to myself…”

Born into a musical family, Mezz Coleman has been singing, playing, recording and writing music for most of her life.

Mezz spent her childhood in suburban Melbourne playing the piano, singing Beatles songs with her two brothers, and performing in school choirs and bands. By the time she finished high school, she was a well-seasoned vocalist in Melbourne’s jazz scene and went on to study voice and jazz improvisation at the Victorian College of the Arts. She released her debut album Parts of You, Parts of Me in 2010.

Over her long and widely varied career, Mezz has worked with some of the biggest names in the Australian music industry. She has supported pop chanteuse Kimbra, country sweetheart Sara Storer and iconic Aussie singer-songwriter and activist, Shane Howard (Goanna). She has performed at the Northcote Social Club, Federation Square, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, and numerous folk, pop and jazz festivals around the country.

Mezz has also worked as a backing vocalist and session singer for artists such as Nana Mouskouri, Marcia Hines, Barry Humphries, Gary Pinto, Delta Goodrem, Anthony Callea, Brian McFadden, John Foreman, The Melbourne Gospel Choir and more. Most recently, she was a vocalist and keyboardist for Katie Weston’s iconic Alanis Morrisette tribute show Uninvited.

Mezz was recently the recipient of an Australian Independent Record Labels Association's (AIR) Women in Music Mentorship and was also selected by the peer panel for Arts and Culture Maribyrnong’s 2023 Creative Development Program, a two week Artist-in-Residence project and grant.

Her most recent singles Magic Moment, Lion and Chasing Light have all received significant radio play on Triple R, ABC Radio and lots of community stations around Australia. Her new album I Never Said a Word was released in September 2023.

Family, love, empowerment and vulnerability have always been staple ingredients and themes of Mezz’s song writing. With more than 10 years between albums, Mezz has undergone a profound artistic transformation from neophyte to empress of her own domain.

Mezz lives in west Melbourne with her husband, two children, one dog, one piano and a lovingly-tended garden.

β€œWhether it's through music or just in my own day-to-day life, all I’m craving is to feel connected… I think music is such a beautiful way to connect into something bigger. I hope in some very small way that people can feel that when they hear my music.”
